Asbestos is a substance used extensively in building products from the 1940's through the 1980's. In fact it was used as a primary agent in over 5000 different construction materials and manufactured products. As is well documented asbestos can cause some serious health issues. As a result it has been banned from use in Australia.

Asbestos fibres tend to break into very tiny fibres and are virtually indestructible. Asbestos fibres, once released into the atmosphere, can remain suspended in the air for hours even days.

Types of Asbesto

Under law, asbestos containing materials (ACM's) are divided into two types: Bonded and Friable Asbesto.
Products asbestos can be found in:

Asbestos - Where is it found?

Buildings (Domestic, commercial and industrial) built prior to 1990 may have building materials containing asbestos. Potentially, those built after 1990 may contain traces of asbestos. It is often difficult to identify the presence of asbestos simply by sight. The only true way is by laboratory test. If you are uncertain and you think that the material in question may contain asbestos, then it is best to assume it does until proven otherwise.

In workplace environments, asbestos was widely used from the 1940's right up until the late 1980's, when the health risks associated with exposure to asbestos become more widely accepted. In workplace settings, asbestos is found in cement sheeting, as an insulator on pipes and in buildings, as a fire retardant in textiles and as a filtering material in the chemical and food industries.

In domestic dwellings, particularly in QLD bonded asbestos was readily used in the manufacture of asbestos-cement corrugated & flat sheets (Fibro) for roofing & walls.
Undisturbed or painted fibro does not pose a health risk.
